Nova Scotia Plein Air Painting Adventure

Ladies and gentlemen, I ventured to the east and found that it is most worthy of our artistic endeavors. Therefore I am proposing a call to all artists, to take on the challenges that lady Atlantic can bring. Fear not her cold embrace, for the land that touches her is warm, friendly and full of beauty. Plus they make really good beer!

Harbour Fog

Here is a tentative workshop package for all those interested in Nova Scotia. Lunenburg and Mahone Bay are the designated choices of painting spots.

Workshop Itinerary:

  • September 29 - workshop commences 2:00 to 6:00 pm
  • September 30 - workshop 10:00 am to 4:00 pm
  • October 1 - workshop 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm (free morning & afternoon for exploration)

Accommodations

For those of you who will be flying into Halifax, we recommend staying there the first evening. We found with the three hour time change, and the 4 ½ hour flight, your first day is pretty much over. The airport is about 35 kms from Halifax and Lunenburg is about 100 kms from Halifax. If you wish to stay in Halifax and drive out in the morning, that’s great as the workshop doesn’t begin until 2:00 pm (meet at 1:30).

If you’re staying in Halifax that evening we recommend the Cambridge hotel on Barrington Street. Rates are reasonable and rooms are very clean. Located downtown, it’s easy to find and leaving in the morning is simple. There are many restaurants in the area. My favorite one was the Economy shoe factory, just 2 blocks away.  Known for its award winning nachos, there are many choices from appetizers to entrees.

There are no major hotels chains in Lunenburg but there are loads of stunning places to stay. There are a few places with a few double occupancy spaces. Most however are single rooms. The prices are very reasonable and rooms are very clean. We have networked with two places we feel are great and will suit our needs.

Topmast motel:

Located in Lunenburg. This motel you can park right outside your door (ground level). This makes for ease of transferring your painting supplies from your car to your room.

RATES: Simple room, queen bed - $85.00
Two double beds in one room - $95.00
      Kitchenette - $105.00

Brigantine Inn:

Oceanfront accommodations in the heart of downtown Lunenburg. These rooms are in a number of different buildings all close together. We warn you, there are lots of floors and stairs (no elevators) but really have great views and are neat buildings. Very rustic, but the rooms are very modern and super clean. Restaurants and the all important pubs are right beneath you. Parking is a bit of a challenge but it is never far and very safe.

There is so many configurations (view, no view, suite, regular cabana boy, etc.) that I couldn’t put them all in here.

Please call for rates. Let them know you’re with the Swinton art group.

Edgewater B&B:

This spiffy B&B is in Mahone bay (10 kms) away but comes highly recommended. The town and views are stunning and the food is worth writing home about. If you're a B&B type then this is a great place.

There are lots of other places to stay in Lunenburg or Mahone bay however the ones we have suggested have given us special rates.

Food

Talk about gaining a few pounds. Lobster, halibut, mussels, crab, and really yummy Nova Scotia beer and wine. Not only will you be enamored by the beautiful scenery but the amazing people and food. Some of our best suppers were at the local pubs however there were loads of great restaurants in Lunenburg and in Mahone bay (10 kms away).

We have booked a really nice lunch deli eatery that will make bag lunches for any one who would like (especially for the 2 full painting days). The Salt Shaker Deli has exceptional sandwiches, and treats with everything homemade. Donna will take orders on the first day for anyone wanting this service on Tuesday or Thursday.

Transportation

West jet has a direct flight to Halifax and flight times can vary. Usually it takes around 4:40 minutes. We are in the process of getting a group rate of $336.60 each way (not including taxes). This rate will apply to anyone leaving on September 23rd at 11:40 am, arriving in Halifax at 07:26 pm. Leaving Halifax September 29th at 8:00 pm and arriving in Calgary at 10:30 pm. Please talk to Donna by June 6th if you would like to be part of this group rate.

Lunenburg is 90 kms. It takes about 1 hour if you use the freeway and about 1.5 hours if you take the lighthouse route.

Rental cars are available at the airport but it is recommended that you book ahead of time to ensure you get the size of car you need.

Prices

Due to the many requests for different travel arrangements, a one package fits all was not possible. Each individual will be responsible for their own travel arrangements. The following is the workshop fee:

Workshop fee: $400.00 + GST - This will cover four days of full instruction plus one afternoon critique session.

Class Description

To have fun while painting on vacation.

The focus of this workshop is not outright painting but learning to paint while on holidays. I will be available each workshop day for all your painting needs. Along with all the group and individual instruction, there will critiques where we will have group discussions on almost all the principles needed to paint on location.

It does not matter what level you are at. We are here to have fun and capture some memories in art.
